Der Bienenforscher Charles D. Michener ist verstorben

Beitragvon Merkur » Mittwoch 4. November 2015, 10:08

Charles Duncan Michener,
Distinguished Professor Emeritus and Emeritus Senior Curator, Biodiversity Institute
(September 22, 1918 - November 1, 2015)

Our colleague and friend Charles Michener passed away on November 1st, in his own home and surrounded by his family. Mich joined the Department of Entomology at the University of Kansas in 1948 and retired in 1989, though he continued to carry out research and publish through 2015. He was a member of US National Academy of Sciences, and served as editor of the journal Evolution and associate editor of the Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics. Mich was a mentor to his own numerous graduate students, and to students of bees around the world. His major works, The Social Behavior of the Bees (1974) and The Bees of the World (2000) were the starting points for many careers in bee biology and sociality. Although he will be sorely missed, his was a life well-lived.

Sincerely,
Deborah Smith and the Entomology group at KU (Kansas University)

Sad news indeed, he was one of the big researchers of social hymenoptera. His 1974 book is still on my list of books to find and read! For those interested in him and his work see http://ae.oxfordjournals.org/content/60/4/201.full.pdf (LegendS 4, 2014) and https://journals.ku.edu/index.php/melit ... /5006/4494 (a very recent, sept. 2015, review!).
